Bright Minds, shaping spaces for research

Busselli Scherer and THE PLAN present “Bright Minds”: an editorial journey through the NOI Techpark D2 project to explore the South Tyrolean firm’s architectural vision

One year after the inauguration of the mixed-use building dedicated to the research on the future of food at the NOI Techpark in Bolzano, the South Tyrolean architecture firm produces a project monograph edited by THE PLAN Editions. With “Bright Minds,” Busselli Scherer sheds light on the values, design choices and behind-the-scenes of a process where human architecture is both the driving force and the end point.

In the words of Pierre Alain-Croset (Politecnico di Milano), author of the critical text of the monograph, the essence of the publishing project:

“With great intellectual honesty, this book offers insights into the “how” and “why” behind the design choices. The emphasis is in particular on the method and design philosophy adopted by the Busselli Scherer studio, rooted in a commitment to listening and combining the many disciplinary skills essential to successfully navigating the design of a particularly complex building”.

“A “behind-the-scenes look” would be an apt subtitle for the book: the process of architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, industrial firms for the facades, furniture suppliers, and lighting systems all working together in synergy is all too seldom discussed in architectural publications, often staying concealed from the general public”.

A special event

On Friday, May 23rd, in the beautiful location of the Glasshouse at the Park Hotel Laurin in Bolzano, we held the book presentation event. Together with Nicola Leonardi, co-founder and managing editor of THE PLAN, and Luca Paterno, director Unit Building & Development of NOI Techpark, we covered the stages of this journey. A wonderful time of sharing!

A candle holder symbol of light

“We set out to design architecture for researchers and research work.

Much like the very concept of knowledge, the building shines brightly and stands out.”

Designed by the studio, this object is meant to be a symbol of the architecture of D2 and a tribute to those who believed in the architectural and editorial project. A symbol of light that, starting from the pilaster on the facade of the building, materializes into a handcrafted aluminum element, simple and unique in its identity.

The study of shape starts from the section of the pilaster, broken down and folded to create a new shape, almost like origami. The result is a sinuous yet elemental craft element that, like the D2 facades, reflects light.

The candle holder is a project
