Early 20th Century lake house receives a makeover. New holiday apartments strike a balance between sophisticated elegance and rustic simplicity.
Setting
Not far from the Monticolo mountain lake a house ensconced between the woods and vineyards draws inspiration from the pristine environment, inviting contemplation and reflection. Rustic homes next to farm buildings blend into the pristine landscape. With the arrival of the earliest spring sun, daffodils, snowdrops, and buttercups come out in bloom, colouring the land in an extraordinary spectacle.

Living spaces
Situated on a gently sloping gradient, the Waldheim house echoes the morphology of traditional dwellings. The pitched roof and balconies look out across the lake, while its rectilinear form suggest real-world functionality. Built in 1924, it was initially a farm house and later in the 1960’s it was converted into holiday apartments. Under the retired owners, the structure offers traditional rustic simplicity combined with sophisticated elegance. The two-storey building has five flats – each offering private views – and a main apartment, whose enlargement endowed it with generous dimensions. Looking out on the private woodland the external staircase and pergola add holiday flair to the whole edifice.
Style and materials
The Waldheim house project was premised on the desire to establish a strong relationship between the edifice and its environment. Living in nature, and its exposure to seasonal conditions was an integral aspect of the project. Thanks to the large openings, inhabitants can visually appreciate the extraordinary surroundings. The materials used in the refurbishment are inspired by rural traditions, solidity of the old houses and the minimalist lifestyle. Iron, natural stone and native larch wood alternate in a sequential interplay. The Busselli Scherer Architekten team seeks to naturally integrate the structure into its rural context like a traditional farmhouse.
